Never in our wildest imaginations would we be writing to share this message. Out of concern for our community we are taking recommendations from the CDC and WHO by limiting possible exposure to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Though our San Diego region is not experiencing a vast spread of the virus at this time, we are taking precautions for the health and safety of our speakers, attendees and volunteers which are our top priority. With heavy hearts, we are postponing the 25th Annual Y Design Conference until September 18-19, 2023. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Y in the Fall. Stay healthy & keep creating good design! If you have any questions, please email us at info@sandiego.aiga.org. Learn More.

The Salk Institute for Biological Studies
My background includes work with full-service agencies, universities, and in-house creative departments in San Francisco, San Diego, and Helsinki, Finland. Cross-cultural communication has been an ongoing professional focus and personal interest. While studying graphic design at California College of the Arts in San Francisco I worked with the in-house creative team of clothing company Esprit de corp. The workspace was a historical building with a rooftop vegetable garden, custom carved furniture, and an Amish quilt collection. The work environment kindled an appreciation for healthy living, meticulous craftsmanship, and the infinite possibilities of using basic geometry in creative expression. Since then, I’ve worked in studios housed in a renovated bus repair station, Pier 80 in San Francisco, and a historical ceramic factory in Finland. The spaces I’ve worked in have always influenced my design by helping me embody the everyday lifestyles and priorities of the audiences they serve. The organizations I most admire acknowledge the genius loci of the terrain, structures, materials, and history within which they exist and build their identities on. I am currently a graphic designer at the iconic modernist campus of The Salk Institute for Biological Studies.
Chase Wood
Taco Bell
Chase Wood was raised in Hollister, CA, and lives and works in Southern California. After attending Long Beach State University where he received a BFA in Illustration, Chase continued his career working as a graphic artist in the fashion industry. Here, he worked with a multitude of clients and brands, forcing him to continually adapt to a wide range of brand aesthetics and trends. Also during that time, Chase founded a small creative agency with a few colleagues, allowing him to expand his skill sets in the areas of brand identity design and illustration. After a few years, Chase was offered an Art Director position at TBD (Taco Bell Design, the brand’s in-house agency.) This is where he began to channel his know-how towards leadership and communicative imagery with the cult brand that is Taco Bell. Chase’s ultimate goal is to evoke a clear message in his work, which is what attracted him to the illustrative side of art. He enjoys taking one small bit of subject matter and letting his pen do the rest, getting lost in detail.

Street Dreams: Lowrider 101
Jose Venegas (Writerz Blok at the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation)
Join Jose, a graffiti artist, and classic car owner/artist, as he shares his imaginative design process for customizing the ’67 Impalas that he is bringing to Y25. Two-three cars will be at this outdoor think-shop. One fully custom lowrider and one in all-original, classic stage. The think-shop will consist of breaking down a brief history of lowriders plus performance info and costs. Jose will also have an outline of a classic car so attendees can design and color patterns to envision the custom paint design process.
Jose Venegas:
Jose, born in Miami and raised in San Diego, was always fascinated by Graffiti Art, but could never find a place to express his talent. With a lack of places to safely and legally practice his art and absolutely no resources in the community to utilize his talent, he turned to vandalism as a form of expressing himself. On his way to work one day, he noticed a group of youth, his age and younger, spray-painting large wooden walls with Graffiti Art. He witnessed more people doing Graffiti the next day and decided to skip work. Since 1999, Jose has worked to support and inspire local youth and his community about the importance of this art form and the Writerz Blok program at the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation.
Jose was hired as the Writerz Blok Facility Supervisor in 2005. He became an instructor, a mentor, learned graphic design and screen-printing while working at Writerz Blok. He has also partnered with local organizations on numerous projects working with at-risk youth and after-school classes. As a Latino man in this thriving community, he has been an integral part of empowering and inspiring his community, co-workers and his people through his work at Writerz Blok, the nation’s first ever legal Graffiti Arts park.

The Y25 Design Conference is an event for people who share a passion for design, experience, innovation, usability, and other cool things. The conference is intended to be an inclusive environment where anyone interested in doing, making, and designing cool stuff is welcome.
Along with people from different industries and backgrounds, we encourage conversations and differing perspectives as part of the Y Design Conference experience. We will ensure a safe environment for everyone, and your cooperation is expected.
To that end, we will provide an environment free of harassment for every person. To be clear “harassment” includes:
- Offensive speech related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, race, or religion
- Offensive vulgar or sexual imagery in public spaces and presentations
- Intimidation, stalking, following, unauthorized photography or recording of a person or people
- Sustained disruption of talks or other events
- Inappropriate physical contact or unwelcome sexual attention.
These are all things that have no place at the Y Design conference. We expect attendees to act in a way that’s a positive representation to the community at-large. Anyone asked to stop harassing behavior will be expected to stop immediately. If not, appropriate action will be taken by conference staff, security, and/or law enforcement.
Conference staff and volunteers will provide any of the following should the need arise:
- Expulsion from the conference, including the hotel (where appropriate)
- Escorts to and from venues
- Mediation of conflicts relevant to Y Design Conference event and/or policy
- Contacting security or law enforcement
- Assistance to any Y Design attendees with special needs
Whether you are a volunteer, speaker, sponsor, or attendee, you must agree to behave appropriately or we’ll ask you to leave. You can help, too, by looking around and letting us know if some one’s behavior is negatively affecting our culture.

For a quarter century, there has been a place for like-minded designers who notice it all to gather in San Diego, Calif. More than just a sunny-side-up town, San Diego has become a design-centered, highly respected creative forefront in the industry. The people who have made it such are still here and thriving.
So what is this gathering place? It’s called the Y. The two-day event, produced entirely by volunteers, puts design at the center of everything. The Y is a place to reconnect with yourself, your passion, your why. It takes us out of the day-to-day how we design and opens up our imagination to remind us why we design. At the Y, designers find the inspiration they need to reach the next level. It’s a space for creatives to flock to each year, a forum where they can bask in the company of designers who radiate inspiration and embrace big ideas.
